1. Overview
DAKOS’ PCI Card (StreamXpert / Model Name : SX-104) is a device that developed hardware acceleration engine enables a large-capacity high-speed multimedia streaming by integrating storage device, memory device, and network device into a PCI embedded system based on an I/O processor. Large-capacity data can be transmitted from storage device directly to network device at a high speed almost without using the host CPU.
It has functions such as, automatic software upgrades(executable after downloading from the headend).
2. Technology
Zero-copy Mechanism with TCP/IP Off-Loading
The accelerator is designed to transfer a large streamed data with zero-copy mechanism from a high-speed storage to a Gigabit Ethernet network. For this each accelerator provides up to 512MB of PMEM managed with the unit of block sizes, which are 2MB, 1MB, 512KB, 256KB for different transferred multimedia data types. In order to implement the zero copy mechanism via PMEM a TCP/IP kernel stack needs to be redesigned to take advantage of PMEM with Scatter/Gather I/O and TCP/UDP checksum offload provided by a partially supported TOE chip. Optimized with PMEM the newly designed TCP/IP kernel can provide the zero-copy mechanism, with which the streaming data copied to PMEM is directly transmitted to network without additional memory copy operations. As well as thew zero-copy, the new TCP/IP kernel is modified to support TCP/UDP/IP checksum and Scatter/Gather I/O to transfer data more efficiently. Therefore, out accelerator system is able to perform a high-quality streaming service with at least 20Mbps for each of 50 concurrent users per an accelerator engine and with low CPU intervention.
Hardware Accelerator for Large-Capacity Streaming
The developed hardware accelerator comprises a PCI-to-PCI bridge, a SCSI disk controller, a PMEM(i.e., PCI memory), and a TOE(TCP/IP Offload Engine) on one PCI board. This enables a large-capacity high-speed multimedia streaming with zero-copy mechanism using a PMEM from a high speed storage to the Gigabit Ethernet port.
